Switch Installation & Replacement in New Jersey

A faulty switch isn't just an inconvenience—it's a potential fire hazard. Whether you're dealing with a loose toggle, a buzzing dimmer, or switches that spark when you flip them, Jay's Electric handles every type of switch repair and installation to NJ electrical code.

We install and replace:

  • Standard single-pole and three-way switches for basic on/off control
  • Dimmer switches for adjustable lighting in any room
  • Smart switches compatible with Alexa, Google Home, and other home automation systems
  • Timer switches for bathrooms, outdoor lighting, and energy savings
  • Motion-sensor switches for convenience and security
  • Specialty switches including pilot-light, double-pole, and four-way configurations

When to Replace a Switch

Switches wear out. If you notice any of the following, it's time for a replacement:

  • Switch feels hot to the touch
  • Audible buzzing or crackling sounds
  • Lights flicker when the switch is in the "on" position
  • Toggle is loose or doesn't stay in position
  • Visible scorch marks or burning smell

We'll diagnose the issue, confirm whether it's the switch or the wiring behind it, and make the repair safely.

Code-Compliant Installation

Every switch we install meets New Jersey electrical code requirements. That includes proper box fill calculations, correct wire gauge, secure connections, and grounding. If your home has older wiring or ungrounded boxes, we'll walk you through your options and make sure the work is done right.

Smart Switch Upgrades

Upgrading to smart switches gives you remote control, scheduling, and voice activation—without replacing your existing light fixtures. We'll confirm compatibility with your wiring (neutral wire requirements vary by model), install the switch, and help you get it connected to your network.

How it works

01

Inspection & Diagnosis

We test the existing switch, check for proper grounding, and identify any wiring issues that need attention.

02

Safe Removal & Installation

Power is shut off at the breaker. Old switch is removed, connections are verified, and the new switch is installed to code.

03

Testing & Cleanup

We test the switch under load, confirm proper operation, and leave your space clean.

Common questions

Can I replace a switch myself?+

You can, but if you're not confident working with live wiring or your home has older wiring without a ground, it's safer to call a licensed electrician. We see a lot of DIY switch jobs that create hazards down the line.

Do smart switches work with my existing wiring?+

Most smart switches require a neutral wire in the box. Older homes sometimes lack this. We'll check your wiring and recommend compatible models or alternative solutions if needed.

Why does my dimmer switch buzz?+

Buzzing is usually caused by incompatible bulbs, an overloaded dimmer, or a low-quality switch. We'll identify the cause and recommend the right dimmer for your lighting load.
