Receptacles

Professional installation, replacement, and upgrade of electrical outlets throughout your home or business. Code-compliant work that keeps your property safe and functional.

Outlet Installation & Replacement in New Jersey

Every receptacle in your property needs to deliver power safely and reliably. Whether you're dealing with a dead outlet, need GFCI protection in wet areas, or want to add USB charging ports, Jay's Electric LLC handles all receptacle work to current NJ electrical code.

We install and replace standard 15-amp and 20-amp outlets, GFCI receptacles for kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor locations, tamper-resistant outlets for child safety, and specialty receptacles for appliances and equipment.

When to Replace or Upgrade Outlets

Outlets wear out. If you're experiencing loose plugs that fall out, scorch marks or discoloration around the faceplate, outlets that feel warm to the touch, or frequent tripping when you plug something in, it's time for replacement.

Older homes often lack GFCI protection where it's now required by code. We'll assess your current setup and bring it up to standard during kitchen and bathroom remodels, home sales, or routine safety upgrades.

GFCI & AFCI Protection

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) are required in areas exposed to moisture—bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, and outdoor spaces. They shut off power instantly when they detect a ground fault, preventing shock.

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI) are required in bedrooms and many living areas in newer construction. They detect dangerous arcing conditions that can cause fires.

We install both types where code requires them and can retrofit older homes to meet current safety standards.

Specialty Receptacles

Need more than a standard outlet? We install:

  • 20-amp receptacles for power tools, kitchen appliances, and workshop equipment
  • USB combo outlets that charge devices without a wall adapter
  • Dedicated appliance circuits for refrigerators, microwaves, and washers
  • 240-volt outlets for dryers, ranges, and EV chargers
  • Weatherproof outdoor receptacles with in-use covers
  • Floor and countertop pop-up outlets for kitchens and offices

Every installation is wired correctly, grounded properly, and secured to code.

Our Process

We don't just swap outlets. We check the box condition, verify proper grounding, confirm wire gauge matches the breaker size, and test the circuit before and after installation. If we find backstabbed wires or aluminum wiring, we'll let you know and fix it right.

All work is performed by licensed electricians. We pull permits when required and coordinate inspections so your project stays compliant.

How it works

01

Assessment

We inspect the existing outlet, circuit, and wiring to determine the correct replacement or upgrade needed.

02

Installation

Power is shut off at the breaker. We remove the old receptacle, verify grounding and wire condition, and install the new outlet securely.

03

Testing & Verification

We test the circuit for proper wiring, grounding, and GFCI/AFCI function before restoring power and confirming operation.

Common questions

Do I need GFCI outlets in my older home?+

If your home was built before GFCI requirements, you're not always required to retrofit them unless you're doing a remodel or addition. That said, we strongly recommend installing them in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, and outdoor areas for safety. They prevent serious shocks and are inexpensive to add.

Why do my outlets have loose plugs?+

Receptacles wear out over time. The internal contacts lose tension, and plugs no longer grip firmly. This creates resistance, which can cause heat buildup and potential fire risk. We replace worn outlets with new, properly rated receptacles.

Can you add outlets without running new wire?+

In many cases, yes. We can extend an existing circuit if it has capacity and the wire gauge is appropriate. We'll assess the load on the circuit and confirm it meets code before adding additional receptacles. If the circuit is maxed out, we'll recommend a new dedicated circuit.
